Starlight wandered happily through the gardens, his eyes trained on the full moon instead of the ground. Tonight was the night. Under the stars he and his mate Starbright would come together to make their first litter of pups. He was so excited that every so often he gave a little jump and flapped his wings. Finally, finding a nice spot in almost the middle of one of the meadows where they could watch the stars without trees obstrcuting their veiw, he sat down and waited for her, still staring up at the black sky with its countless stars. Starbright's beautiful pelt shimmered in the darkness. Anyone looking at her might have thought that she was only a great mass of sparkling stars, as the night hid her black fur from view. She too, was excited. She had pledged to her mate long ago that they would have pups, many beautiful pups, and tonight was the night to begin it. She knew she was ready to start a family with Starlight. The only problem was, she couldn't find him. The dark that concealed her own pelt from others also concealed his pelt from her, and the slight breeze had blown his scent away. She ontinued to search, getting a bit more nervous as the minutes ticked by. (2 out of 25)

Starlight licked his lips after ten minutes had gone by. She should have been here by now. They had left the den at the same time, and his scent wasn't that hard to follow, was it? Or... Maybe she had forgotten about him, or gotten scared at the last moment and gone back to the den. These thoughts whirled in his head, making his fur itch. She wouldn't do that, would she?

Starbright continued to search for Starlight, but in vain. He didn't seem to be anywhere in sight. He had to be here though, didn't he? Maybe they were both searching for each other and weren't that far away. This decided her. She stopped suddenly, threw back her head, and let out a howl of longing with only one word in it. "Starlight!"

Starlight's ears pricked up as the faint howl reached them. She was here! He felt a bit guilty about thinking that she might not have come, but quickly pushed it to the back of his mind. Starbright was here, and waiting for him! "Starbright!" He howled back, as loud as he possibly could. "Stay right where you are, I'm coming to get you!"He stood still for a second, judging the exact direction the howl had come from, then took off running as fast as he could towards his mate.

Starbright let a smile spread from ear to ear. He had heard her! Her two tails wagged very fast as she waited for him, letting out a short howl every now and then to help him find his way there. She stood up, ready to tackle him and lick his face when he arrived. It was hard to wait though, but she knew he was getting closer every second, and so stayed there instead of rusing toward him and perhaps by him.

Her howls kept Starlight on a straight line toward her. As straight as an arrow, and nearly as fast as one, he raced towards her, letting his mind wander a but, thinking of pup names. Would Arrow be a good name? He didn't have time to decide though, as Starbright's unmistakable form suddenly sprang into veiw. "Starbright!" He called out again, not slowing his speed and tackling her to the ground with excitment. He covered her face and ears with great big slobbery licks.

Starbright had forgotten how alike they were. Of course he would have had the same thought as her. Of course, she still let out a small bark of surprise when she was knocked over and licked. "Starlight!" She said again, and rolled to her feet, then leaped at him and licked him. Just because he had taken her plan, didn't mean that she wasn't going to let it go to waste.

Starlight let out almost an identical bark as she suddenly leaped at him and began licking. She didn't knock him down though, and he returned her licks with just as much excitment, until in looked as though they had both dunked their heads in a lake. His tail was wagging so fast that it looked like a helicopter's blades. Hmm... perhaps Heli for a pup, or Copter? Once again though his thoughts were cut short as Starbright stopping licking him and stepped back a pace, looking at him with deep love in her eyes.

"Starlight." She said again, but calmly this time, although her tails were still wagging. "Would you like to watch the stars with me?" Her smile was calm and gentle now that their greetings were over. Without waiting for a reply, because she knew it already, she padded over to him and sat down by his side, leaning againt him and turning her eyes to the great sweep of sky overhead.

Starlight's eyes lit up at the mention of stargazing. "Of course I would Starbright." He said, also calmly, and sat down beside her, letting his tail rest around her. He trained his eyes on the stars and was soon lost in thought about pup names and the beautiful volpe beside him.

Starrbright leaned into him more, and wrapped both of her tails around him. With a content sigh, she leaned her head on his shoulder, and looked up, picking out constellations and making up her own. This was what she loved to do most of all, stargaze with her beloved mate. The feel of him againt her made her feel calm and safe, as it always did.

Starlight couldn't keep the thoughts of names to himself any longer. "Starbright?" He asked, not taking his eyes off the stars. "What do you think our pups will be like?" He deicded to get into the topic slowly. besides, he was very interested in what she thought their pups would look like. He had heard a rumur from another volpe that someone had had a pup that was the rainbow of the stars with beautiful black dots. The same rumur also said that the two volpes had been of the starlight breed, which he and Starbright were.

Starbright smiled, and continued to look at the stars. In her mind, the constellations were beginning to look like pups. "Well, I think they will all have very unique personalities," She said. We'll teach the oldest litter to look after the younger ones a bit, so we don't have to try and raise all our pups by ourselves. Really having nothing else to say, she kept on making pups out of the stars, lots of pups. "Each one will have their own constellation too." She said after a few seconds.

Starlight wagged his tail slowly over her coat. He could almost see the pups in his mind's eye. "Are you hoping for more males or females?" He asked. Names were important, but Starbright seemed to have an endless fountain of information about their soon to be pups. Perhaps she had spent as much time thinking about how to raise them as he had on names for them.
