'Type' refers to the elemental alignment of a volpe. Types determine what kinds of attacks a volpe can learn, and also give it some advantages and disadvantages to other types.
There are 11 types, Basic, Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Electric, Nature, Ice, Arid, Magic, and Dark. Volpes can be up to two types at a time.
All sanctuary Average, Normal, and K9 volpes are pure Basic types.
All sanctuary Royal and Bejeweled volpes are Basic | Magic types.

Attack Learning:
As stated before, types determine elemental alignment. The more elementally aligned a volpe, the more moves it can learn in a specific element type. However, this also means a volpe with an elemental alignment to one element will have trouble learning moves in another type.
The Alignment Scale determines how aligned an attack is to an element. It ranges from 1 to 10, 1 being "Very little aligned", and 10 being "essence of 'this type'". All attacks (except for Basic) will be given an Alignment Scale number to help determine if a volpe has the ability to learn that attack or not.
A Basic type volpe can learn attacks in -any- type with an Alignment Scale of 5 or less.
A Pure type volpe can learn attacks in it's own type with an Alignment Scale of up to 10 (ie; any attack of their type). However, in any other type except for the type's opposite, it can only learn attacks with an Alignment Scale of 3 or less. A Pure type volpe cannot learn any attacks in it's opposite type.
[ Ex. A pure Fire type volpe can learn all Fire attacks, a few Earth attacks, but no Ice attacks. ]
Secondary Types:[/u]
Volpes with a secondary type..
A Basic type volpe with a secondary type (ie; Basic | Fire) can learn attacks in most types* with an Alignment Scale of 5 or less. In addition, it can learn attacks in it's secondary type with an Alignment Scale of 8 or less. However, in its opposite element, the volpe can learn attacks with an Alignment scale only of 1.
A dual type volpe (ie; Magic | Fire) can learn attacks with an Alignment Scale of 8 or less in both of it's types. However, in most other types, it can learn moves with an Alignment scale of 3 or less. But in -Both- of its opposites, the volpe cannot learn any attacks.
[Ex. A Magic | Fire typed volpe can learn most Magic and Fire type attacks, few Earth attacks, but no Ice nor Dark attacks]

Opposite Types:[/u]
Opposite types will not and cannot 'mesh'. There is no technical aspect of Opposite types in battle, all attacks will damage the opposite normally (unless otherwise stated). Opposite types are an OOC factor that state a volpe cannot be a type and its opposite at the same time. If attempted, the types will cancel and the volpe will be reverted back to the Basic Type.
Opposites:
Water - Arid
Fire - Ice
Earth - Air
Electric - Nature
Magic - Necro
The Basic type does not have an opposite.
Weaknesses and Resistances:[/u]
Opposite types are different than type weaknesses and resistances. Weaknesses and resistances do have an effect in battle, unlike Opposite types. When a certain type Volpe is hurt by an Attack of its weakness, that attack's damage is doubled (after calculations). When a volpe certain type is hurt by an Attack of its resistance, that attack's damage is halved (after calculations, rounded down). No Effect refers to when a volpe will not be damaged by a certain attack type. Although types might not be damaged by another, all effects are still applied.
[Ex. An Earth type volpe can not be Damaged by the attack 'Lightning', however it can still become Paralyzed as an effect of 'Lightning'.]
