Okay, so he really shouldn't have been surprised. A lot of Volpes made that assumption, and perhaps it wasn't so crazy given the way they were always together. But he expected the leader of a pack to be a little smarter than average. Surely she should be able to spot the difference between lovers and friends? Grinning incredulously, he shook his head.
No, no. We're not together. As if! She's like my sister. I mean, I suppose I do get jealous if I see her with other males. But I get jealous if I see her with anyone It was awfully childish of him, and deep down he knew that. But he still couldn't help the way he felt. Lavit was his friend-he wasn't prepared to share her with anyone else. Raising his head, he gazed at her curiously I suppose you think that's wrong?

So they weren't a couple? Nadir wasn't sure if she felt relieved or concerned. He posed a hard question though. As a leader she tried to look at everything logically and see both sides to a story. On the one hand, their relationship clearly wasn't healthy. But to say it was wrong? Could she do that?
No, it's not wrong exactly. It's nice that you have each other A diplomatic answer was always the best to her. She was very good at voicing her opinion without causing distress or anger But perhaps you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket? Would it be so terrible if you each had other friends? How like a child at heart this male was. A little selfish, rude, irrational-but at his heart he just wanted things to stay the same, for his friend to be his forever. Unfortunately the real world was not always that kind. She felt like she ought to help him as best she could

A wry smile spread across his face. This female just didn't get it did she? Still, he'd be surprised if she did. Not a single person he had met understood it. Actually, a lot of them thought it weird. He supposed it was weird, though there was a very strong part of him that refused to admit that. People said there was no such thing as normal, so how could there be something weird?
You're wasting your breath He peeked up through a red strand of hair, smirking slightly Not that I don't appreciate it. I've just heard it all before. It's good advice but it doesn't work. Lav doesn't mind if we have other friends, but I do. It bothers me terribly. Besides, who else but her would want to be my friend? I'm not exactly the easiest Volpe to deal with

Oh no. In a split second her heart had made up what to do, almost the instant she heard the words. Then her brain objected to her decision, and the next few seconds were spent in some kind of bizarre conflict of the two organs. She already knew which would win-as did her mouth apparently. Before she had even decided properly she had spoken the words.
I...could be your friend Her tails flicked with embarrassment, but they did provide her with inspiration We already have something in common after all. And I visit your home often anyway. I'm not saying we should jump into anything, but we could try it. Just a visit or two exploring the beach or something? Darn her caring nature! Okay, so he wasn't as cute as puppies. But perhaps he would fill the gap after all? He certainly acted childish enough at times

At her words, several emotions flooded through Les. The first (and perhaps strongest) was suspicion. He was not by nature a trusting Volpe, and the fact that someone would just offer friendship made little sense to him. But on closer inspection, he could see no reason why she would lie. She didn't appear to gain anything and she wasn't the sort to have a hidden agenda.
So he gave way to the second emotion, a small stab of curiousity. Cautiously, he spoke. Why-why would you offer that? He frowned, his own tails flicking in response It's awfully...nice of you Briefly he entertained the idea in his head. What would Lav think of it? True, she wasn't as jealous as he was. But he liked to think it would bother her a little

Amusement filled her. The poor guy said the word 'nice' like it was some kind of foreign word he didn't know how to pronounce. He must be awfully suspicious to ask a question like that. Eager to show that not everyone was as selfish as he might be, she smiled gently.
I don't know. I like you? I am a nice person. Besides, you might be lonely. I know you have that friend of yours, but she can't be with you 24/7 What was he thinking? At least he hadn't instantly rejected the idea. She wasn't as enthuasiastic as she could have been, but she was rather warming to it. Still, he didn't look certain. How could she show him that she wasn't trying to replace anyone? It just wasn't good to be so reliant on one person, not to the point that he was anyway

Lav He corrected somewhat defensively Her name is Lav Doubt flickered through him. What she was suggesting was perfectly reasonable. What's more, he was finding it perfectly reasonable. Nothing in his mind had screamed No! and frantically tried to escape.
Curious by this new feeling of maturity, he glanced at the female. Her pretty amber eyes practically beamed out authority and wisdom. She was the kind of Volpe you would trust, just because she looked like she might always be right. But was she right this time? That was the important thing

Look Though he looked more interested than before, she could tell he still needed some convincing I honestly don't have an alterior motive, if that's what you're worried about. I don't want to force you into anything though, so if you prefer I can just go. Really, I won't be offended or anything She paused hopefully, but after a minute of silence her hopes were dashed.
Okay then. No problem. See you around Getting to her feet, she neatened out her fur and rose up. Swishing her tails, she managed a small smile to show there were no hard feelings. Turning round, she began to walk away, full of dignity

Technically, he felt he was more than happy to let her go. Really, what did he need another friend for? He and Lavit were happy enough as it was. And while Nadir seemed nice, there was really no need for her. No, let her go.
But, the strangest thing was the further she got away the more uncomfortable he felt. Trying to shake the feeling, he shuffled his paws. He didn't need her after all. So why did he feel so...disappointed that she was going?
Wait He had spoken without much thought, almost like an instinct. Sure enough, the feeling of discomfort vanished the second she stopped walking You don't have to go. Maybe you could just stay here a while. You know, we can talk or something Though his tone was casual and stand-offish, his eyes betrayed his true feelings

A grin spread across her face at his words. She'd been hoping so badly that he would stop her, only perhaps she hadn't realized just how badly until then. There was just something about his grumpy attitude which made her smile. He was very like Octile in that way, except he had a child-like charm which made it a little more bearable.
Still smiling, she padded back over and resumed her seat. She wondered briefly how long this arrangement might last. There was a chance Les would get fed up of course. Or maybe Lavit wouldn't like it. Well, either way it was worth a try. So what do you want to talk about?
