Sandpool jumped up this time, her tails wagging furiously. "Oakstar! Gingerstar is my sister! Oh, don't worry, I'm not offended for her at all; I've told her that she's pretty reckless, for being a leader. She almost killed off our entire pack, until Bramblepool and I told her that the waters were poisoned." She said, her tails still wagging at escape velocity. If that didn't annoy Oakstar, that would be a miracle.

Oakstar blinked, and he almost stood up himself, but when Sandpool explained that she knew her sister was reckless as it was, he breathed a sigh of relief. "But... do you know where she is now?" he asked. "Why aren't you still with her? Did... something happen to her?" he asked, his voice holding a considerable tone of concern now.

Sandpool shrugged. "After the poisoning incident, the rest of the pack got angry at us. They said we were planning to overthrow Gingerstar. So... we asked her if we could just disappear from the pack. She ended up using the cover-up that we'd died from the poisoned waters; that's how they knew they were poisoned, she said to the pack; they were getting sicker and sicker, but they were able to hold off until after they had been made warriors. Then... Leopardstar found us."

"Ah, yes, Leopardstorm. Rainstar has had many a good thing to say about her dear deputy." Oakstar murmured thoughtfully. "I've seen how Leopardstorm acts, and she's not all that different from how Rainstar was. Yes, I know, it may seem hard to believe--but Rainstar was once antisocial. She refused to talk, except to me and Bravestar. Eventually, though, she began to talk to others. She tried to avoid Darkheart, thoguht. She always told me that something didn't... seem right about him."

Sandpool nodded as she said, "I've heard her talk about that sometimes. Except that... well, I might be the only one that's noticed, but have you noticed that she seems to hang out with my brother all the time?" she asked, curious. She thought she detected something between the two... but what?

Oakstar laughed as he said, "I believe that would be called 'spring fever', or something similar to that, Sandpool. I think your brother might be in love with Leopardstorm. Or she might be in love with him. Or maybe it is both." He shrugged as he said, "Either way, a lot of Fire's Volpes seem to have the spring fever... I think we all caught it from Rainstar and Bravestar."

"If love be an illness, don't give me a cure for it!" Sandpool said proudly, rolling over on her back and pawing at Oakstar. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say that, underneath all of that distant look and distant voice and guise of annoyance whenever I'm around, I'd almost be tempted to say that you like me~"

Oakstar blinked as Sandpool asked this, and he also sat up. Had she...? Did she just say that...? Had he seriously just been caught? He drew in a breath as he said, "Despite the fact that you are my polar opposite in so many ways--I could nap the whole day away, whereas you seem to find it hard to sit still for so much as two minutes--I guess you could say that I've been caught, red-handed."

Sandpool thought for a few minutes. Then, she laughed. The first thing that would have shocked Oakstar was the fact that she didn't turn around and answer him two seconds later. "I guess you could say that I did catch you red-handed." She said, still giggling. "I don't know why this seems to funny to me, I'm sorry..."

Oakstar laughed here. He laughed as he said, "It's completely fine, Sandpool. I'm not sure what's amusing, either, but I know that, once we get back to the Sanctuary, people will certainly have that... oh, how did Fire put it...? 'Raised-eyebrow reaction', I believe it was. Yeah, something about raised eyebrows." His tail swayed peacefully as he said, "I think your brother might have the best reaction out of all of them, though."

Sandpool blinked as she stared at Oakstar. "Ohmigosh you actually laughed!" she said, chuckling as she shook her head. "That's a first, I know that much. Oh gosh, I honestly thought that you had no sense of humor, that you were the stiff-upper-lip-type of Volpe." She said, and then, she laughed again as she said, "Oh gosh Bramblepool. He's gonna have pups of his own soon, too; with Leopardstorm, nonetheless."

Oakstar chuckled as he said, "Most people--except for Rainstar and Bravestar--have never heard me laugh, because most of the time, I'm concerned about the well-fare of my pack. But, since I am no long a leader, in all technicalities, I should probably... loosen up a little, yeah?" he asked. "But, it's been so long since I was not a leader that I do not remember my old Warrior name..."

Sandpool blinked. "You don't remember your old Warrior name...?" she asked, her eyes widening. After a few minutes, though, she shrugged. "I suppose that's what happens as time goes on. You... forget stuff. Especially when you've been a Leader for... how many lifetimes now, did you tell Rainstar? Three? Four?" she asked. She knew that this was probably the equivalent of prying, but hey, she was curious.

Oakstar chuckled as he said, "I lost my first two lives carelessly. It was in a fight I knew I had no chance of winning, so that's why I say I lost them carelessly. The other three were because of 'assassination' incidents." Here, he shook his head. "Of course, Darkheart forgot that I had multiple lives, so he had just assumed that our Medicine Volpe--I remember not her name right now--had saved me, so he killed her, forcing her apprentice to take her place and find a new apprentice, and then she was killed too."

"Five?!" Sandpool barked in shock, her eyes on the verge of popping clean out of her head. "And Darkheart tried to kill you? And he killed your Medicine Volpes? For the love of the creators, Oakstar, we have to do something to set up defenses against him and Ashclaw!" her voice was frantic, and with good reason, too. If Darkheart had taken three of Oakstar's lives, as well as two other Volpe's lives, they could not afford to defend themselves.
