d**n, why did he have to be so soft? This was about the least fun thing Ark had ever done. Well, excluding...the incident. He frowned, cursing under his breath as he scrambled violently through the muddy grass. Great, now his fur was being stained.
At least the Temprus seemed happy. He was back clinging to Ark's fur, protected from the wilderness of the grass. Occasionally he seemed to direct the Volpe in a way, although how he had any idea where the female had gone was beyond him.
After what seemed like forever, Ark finally managed to make out some tracks in the grass. They led up to a small 'cave' of sorts, made out of several rocks stacked up. A small smirk of triumph spreading across his face, Ark called out gently.
Hello? Anyone there?

She had been enjoying the silence before she was rudely interrupted. While it wasn't the comfiest place, it had certainly been quiet. Temperance wasn't really the peaceful kind-she preferred noise, busy places with loads of action. Even so, she would have liked a little time to herself right now. Until the male spoiled it.
She had to admit, she was surprised when she heard his voice. She half-wondered if she'd imagined it at first, although why she'd want to imagine such an unpleasant voice was beyond her. Her worst fears were confirmed when she turned round though.
What are you doing here? Her tone wasn't as harsh as before, but her eyes were widened into a glare. A gap in the roof allowed the light to shine down, illuminating her expression Not insulted me enough already?

Taking a deep breath, Ark stepped forward to face her-and stopped. The mud that had previously coated her fur was nowhere to be seen, and now he could see what she looked like properly. And boy, was he shocked!
The previous sludge brown of her fur was gone, replaced with a soft copper. A light tan colour flecked her paws and stomach and her tail was a dark brown, like the tips had been dipped in chocolate. Granted, she still had her little imperfections-her fur was still unruly and matted horribly. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of powdered purple; eyes which were now staring inquisitively at him.
Lowering his head slightly, Ark began his apology. Look, I'm sorry for what I said before. It was a little rude of me. I'm known for my bad temper-it's one of my weaknesses He lifted his head at this point, meeting those wonderful eyes of hers Could you maybe forgive me? Since we are both stuck here for the present time, we could try and at least speak to each other

She almost fell over from her shock. He was apologizing? Peering at the dark shadow that coated his face, she tried to make out his expression. No, he looked serious. More than just serious-he looked like he really was sorry.
Feeling an awkward blush spread across her cheeks, Temperance spoke quickly. I suppose I could forget what you said-for now She muttered softly, confusion filling her head Although talking to you is definitely not something I look forward to Phew, back to teasing. She hated anything remotely related to feelings. Lifting her own head, she met his gaze with a mischievous glint to let him know her last comment wasn't meant to cause offence.
Sensing things were getting too cosy for her liking, she began to revert back to her old tone. You going to sit down then?

Genuinely glad for her forgiveness, the male padded a little further into the cave and sat himself down. It was definitely rather cramped, but Ark knew better than anyone beggars couldn't be choosers. The atmosphere didn't bother him in the slightest-after all, his own home wasn't much brighter than this place.
He was also pleased she seemed to have warmed up slightly, although there was still an edge to her last comment. Quickly, the Volpe caught himself. Just because she was vaguely pretty there was no reason for him to get caught up. She was still grumpy (although she clearly had a sense of humour if that glint was anything to go by) and she wasn't drop-dead gorgeous. Her fur was still messy, and she still looked quite rough, despite those angel-like eyes.
Trying not to appear too friendly, he decided to begin conversation. Am I allowed to inquire your name yet? Or am I still forbidden to know?

She watched him as he padded over to her, moving over when he sat down. The light from the ceiling allowed her to see him better now. She could see his fur was a dark ebony colour, contrasting with the orange of his muzzle and paws. On closer inspection, sparks of orange were visible among the main pelt, brought out by his glowing eyes.
Another thing she could spot now was the creature sat on his back. It was some kind of Temprus, although Temper didn't know enough about breeds to identify it. It looked rather scared, and somewhat sad. Its colours didn't help to lift its mood-depressing greys with bright slashes of white. Still, it was cute and looked fairly well-looked after.
His question made her hesitate, for two reasons. Firstly was the way he asked it. He had such an odd way of phrasing things that she'd never noticed before. Words slipped easily off his tongue, running out his mouth in an almost-poetic way.
The second reason she paused was that she didn't want to answer his question. Well, actually... She bit her lip awkwardly, hoping he wouldn't be offended

You're not going to answer me? He couldn't deny her reply threw him. Yes, she had been initially icy...But he was sure she would at least be willing to make conversation now!
Ark's first reaction was, always, to take offense. He raised his eyebrows briefly, before his expression crumpled into a frown. He was confused mostly, but he still felt a tiny bit hurt. Why wouldn't she tell him her name? Perhaps he had misjudged her after all. Studying her frame, she seemed more embarrassed than spiteful. She seemed almost sheepish, like she was hiding something. Nothing wrong with that-Ark had many dark secrets of his own. But what secrets could be revealed by a simple name?

She could tell she had upset him slightly. She couldn't help wondering briefly why this affected her so much. Why should she care if he was hurt? None of her business, right? She still hurried to reassure him with her answer though.
It's not you! Honest Still biting her lip, Temper wiggled uncomfortably. This was skirting the line of feelings again I just hate my name okay? People always make fun of it There was an awkward silence following her comment, but he seemed appeased. Temper sat watching the sky through the tiny gap, until finally she could bear the quiet no longer.
I may not be about to tell you my name, but you can tell me yours It wasn't just out of politeness that she asked-she was actually rather interested

His confusion was lifted slightly by her reassurance. So she hated her name? Ark rarely felt the stab of curiousity that most Volpes seemed to experience frequently, but even he was intrigued by this. What could her name be-Onion? Squashed face? He gave a slight chuckle at these wonderings. Surely her name couldn't be as bad as those?
If he was completely honest, her question pleased him. Clearly if she was asking him stuff it meant she was interested in him. And he wanted her to be interested in him now. Yes, Ark was a sucker for a nice pair of eyes. It was shallow, but the Hallow doubted there was a Volpe on Earth who wasn't a bit shallow in some way.
I'm Ark He replied, using his nickname out of habit Well, Arconius really. But unless you want to lose half your fur I wouldn't call me that He grinned for the first time, showing a set of blindingly white, yet incredibly sharp teeth

She was glad he didn't push her. While he seemed much nicer than before, she wasn't sure he wouldn't mock her if he knew her true name. His own name was rather unique. If Temper was honest, she preferred his nickname overall-less of a mouthful and easier to remember.
Alright 'Ark' She returned his smile less enthusiastically, but still appearing friendly We've exchanged names-well, you have anyway. What's next? Family history? Collar size?

A smirk escaped from his mouth, surprising him. It had been ages since he'd laughed, and even then it wasn't because of a joke. He tilted his head thoughtfully. A lot of things were surprising him about today. Despite the horrendous start, he had actually begun to...No, enjoy himself was too strong. Still, it was better than idly wandering round his cave again.
Let's go with the history He answered without really thinking about it, a dangerous thing to do. Once his brain had caught up with his mouth, his smile vanished. He couldn't talk about his family! He might as well tell her about what happened on that cliff...
I'm afraid I don't have any family. You'll have to talk He added this remark quickly, and rather bluntly. He had to stop her before she asked any more questions involving relations

He didn't have any family? Temper frowned for a minute-there was something weird about that statement. She couldn't put a paw on it, but just his tone when he'd spoke...
Shaking her head, Temper snorted privately. What was wrong with her? Of course he was going to sound weird when he was saying that! Something awful had probably happened to his family.
Shaking her head at her own stupidity, Temper quickly tried to make up for her mistake. I'm sorry She said it quietly, trying her hardest to sound sincere. She'd never been able to do the whole emotions thing-even though she felt that way inside it never came across I don't have much of a family myself. Just one brother She shook her head again, this time with a grin He's as annoying as hell, but I suppose he can be quite fun

Ark's eyes bore into her as he watched her react to his revelation. Just for a second he thought he noticed her frown, as if she was confused by something. An unusual sense of panic flooded through him. Did she know? Had she guessed? But then her expression changed completely, and she was just a regular concerned Volpe.
Paranoid He thought to himself with a growl You've gotten paranoid you old fool But he couldn't shake away that sensation that she'd noticed something, and his firelight eyes seemed to glance at her cautiously.
A brother? Perfect! He might pose as a convenient distraction Tell me about him. What's his name? It was hard trying to show an interest in someone else. For a long time, Ark had only had to think about himself. He didn't really care about this brother, not as much as he cared about this Volpe. Neither mattered as much as keeping his secret though

A sense of uneasiness spread through Temperance. Why was he looking at her like that? His gaze was fixated on her own, his eyes almost accusing. What had she done?
Speaking of his gaze, Temper hadn't noticed how bright his eyes were. They were so unusual, a bright shade of orange that was so fire-like it was almost yellow. That's exactly what his eyes reminded her of-fire. Like lanterns on Halloween...
He's called Denahi This was easier than focusing on his glance. She could just talk about Denahi We're twins actually. He's a Lion K9, obviously, although he's a lot scruffier than me. Hard to believe right? It was half-teasing, half-resentful that comment. She hadn't forgotten his judging gaze earlier I don't think you'd like to meet him. He tends to fight a lot, especially with males. He'd probably attack you on sight She wasn't sure if this thought made her happy or worried

He actually flinched at her little dig, much to his surprise. Still, she was right. It wasn't fair to judge her on looks alone. He still wasn't sure how he felt about her. She seemed nice, but did he actually...like her?
No, of course not. Ark liked no one, not anymore. He didn't even like himself. Like was the wrong word. Tolerated maybe? Yes, he could see himself tolerating this female. She wasn't hugely irritating, and she had those nice pair of eyes...
I'm sure I could handle him Getting to his feet, Ark began to lazily stroll around the 'cave'. Not that there was much room to stroll. Really though, he was showing off. While his build was slender, his fur rippled, displaying that there was strong muscles hidden beneath.
I bet having him attack everyone causes problems. Especially among your pack Did she have a pack? Looks like he was about to find out
