(Normal Breeding) Now most people didn't know this about Dixie, but she was shy. So shy in fact that she couldn't talk to anyone, not even her brothers or sisters or parents. She was afriad that she would be thought of as a fool or worthless. She hid this horrible shyness under a layer of forced happiness and excitedness, behaving exactly as a K9 should, but for her lack of speech. She was greatful that everyone thought that she had something wrong with her, that she couldn't talk. That way her most secret thoughts could remain hidden, and no one would know how unhappy she truly was. Now of course, the matter of breeding was terrifying for her. She wouldn't be good enough, her pups would be deformed and the colours on them would be ugly. She thought this in her heart, yet she couldn't refuse when Sunray had chosen her to have pups with a male from the other battalion. She didn't even know his name yet. She wagged her tail though, keeping up the show of happiness, as she sat under the spreding branches of a maple tree and waited for the male, whoever it would be, to arrive. (1 out of 25)

Chain had been chosen because it was assumed that he had the same personality as Dixie. Dixie had hidden her shyness so well that Fluffy had selected Chain, an exceedingly hyper and easily distracted K9, to breed with her. She had assumed that hyper pups, although with a short attention span, would have so much energy to burn that they would do training for fun. Chain thought that too, and was overjoyed that he would finally be having his first litter of pups, and with Dixie too! She was so nice and hyper that he couldn't wait to meet her. There!Over there by the maple tree, and she was wagging her tail too! He bounced over to her, not saying anything, as he thought it might be rude to speak when she couldn't. (2 out of 25)

Dixie saw him coming, and though dred was the only emotion inside, she raised her tail and wagged it back and forth as fast as she could. Better that they get this over with now, and then she could go back home. Home wasn't as uncomfortable as this meadow with all its bright flowers. It seemed to her that it just emphasized her stormy grey coat and the fact that she didn't belong, at least at home the surrondings were familliour.

Chain's face broke into a huge doggy smile. She was happy to see her! Oh what joy at this wonderful day. The flowers in the meadow reminded him perfectly of the beautiful colours in Dixie's coat.
Almost instently forgetting his rule to himself that he wouldn't talk to her, he bounced up to her and said "Your coat is so beautiful today Dixie, like the flowers and the butterflies!" Not knowing that he had just said the very opposite of Dixie's thoughts, he stood there, bouncing up and down slightly, waiting for her response.

Dixie's heart inside of her body plummited. Why was he comparing her to the flowers? She was horrible, ugly, not like the delicate beauty that filled the meadow. They matched her coat? The horrible grey? She couldn't see the resemblence at all. In her mind, he couldn't possibly be talking about her rainbows, so she dismissed them altogether.
Her tail wagged faster though, and she got down on her front legs in a play bow. She knew that Volpe mating rituals, no matter what they were, always took awhile, and it would be easier if he tried to catch her or something while she waited for him to do whichever ones he had invented.

In truth, Chain hadn't thought of any of the rituals that proceed Volpe matings and seemed to be entirly unique to each pair. In fact, he wasn't even thinking of pups or the army anymore.
She wanted to play! Asking Chain to play was like dangaling a peice of meat in front of a lion, he was sure to react to it. He playbowed as well, then let out a yip of wordless pleassure and launched himself onto her, rolling over and over in the soft green grass.

Dixie almost forgot herself and lep out a yip of surprise as she was knocked over, but held it in. If she made a noise now, everyone would know that she could, and would begin asking her questions, and looking hurt when they didn't recieve a response. Dixie couldn't stand being the cause of anyones hurt, and so she kept her jaws firmly shut.
She did however wag her tail and lie still for a minute, then pounced on him as well. To anyone passing by, it would have looked like two Volpes deeply in play. It would have been near impossible to discover the sadness that one of them was feeling, had always felt.

Chain wasn't all that acute at judging emotions, even obious ones, so he of course didn't notice anything wrng with Dixie. He just barked happily as he was knocked over, then snapped at her tails playfully, as playing Volpes do. He was so excited to be in this perfect place, with a Volpe that seemed to really like him. Although, in his mind, Dixie liked everyone.
He suddenly distangled himself from their play and bounded over to a particularily beautiful selection of flowers. In a way quite unlike himself, he picked one and began to attemt to carefully weave it into Dixie's fur.

Dixie stopped wagging her tail and pouncing immideatly, and stood completly still as she felt the stem of the flower poking her slightly. She had no idea why he was putting the flower in her fur, but it was something that he wanted to do, and she wasn't going to question it.
After it seemed to be in there tightly, she turned around and noted with surprise that it was a red flower, weaved into the red of the rainbow fur on her back. Maybe he was refering to the rainbow colour of her fur after all. She smiles, and for the first time in her life, it's a genuine smile, not the fake ones that she gives everyone else.

Seeing the smile, Chain's tail wags as fast as it possibly can. "You like the flower?" He asks in joy. He's not quite sure why he wants to make her happy, but he does. "Wait here." He says, and quickly scampers off.
He wanders in the garden for around ten minutes, picking as many of the brightly coloured flowers as he can. "I'm back!" He says proudly, dropping the flowers on the grass. Wasting no time, he begins to weave them into her coat as well, matching the colours of her fur to the colours of the flowers.

Dixie's tail thumps on the ground, and she looks with wonder at the flowers that match her fur. She wonders briefly how long he's going to put flowers in her fur for, then just pushes the thought out of her mind. The flowers smell so nice and look so beautiful that she doesn't care if he continues doing this forever.
She thinks about how their pups will look as he continues to cover her fur with flowers, and is surprised to realize that she's looking forwards to them. Chain may not be the first Volpe to be nice to her, but she seems to feel some strange attachment to him.

Chain continues to cover Dixie with flowers, carefully matching the colour of her fur to them. Soon her whole body except for her head are covered in them. "There." Chain says with satisfaction. "You look even more beautiful now Dixie." He licks her ears joyfully, letting out small, wordless barks of pleasure every few mintures.

More beautiful? Dixie thought. Did that... could that mean that she was beautiful before? The poor Volpe had never felt any sort of self confidence before, so this strange thought surprised her, but made her feel good too, like a warm glow of happiness. Tiny butterflies settled on her fur, the colourful flowers attracting them. They seemed to dance gracefully around her head, and one settled on her left ear.
She very gently brought the ear down in front of her face and stared at the marvolous creature there. She was happy, and she liked it. She lookd calmly over at Chain and wagged her tail, showing that she liked the gift of flowers, and, indirectly, the beautiful butterfly.

Chain wiggled very slowly back and forth as he watched the butterfly on Dixie's ear. He had been about to chase the creature off, but since Dixie seemed to like it, he let it stay. "It's nothing compared to you you know." He said matter of factly, tail beginning to wag. He didn't know quite why he was complimenting Dixie, but he knows that the words coming from his mouth are true.

Dixie blushed. Usually the words of other Volpes, weaither negative or compliments, slid right off her fur as though they were butter, but today they seemed to be sticking there. Dixie had never blushed before, so it felt weird to the K9, but not unplesent. She thought about saying thank you, but stopped herself just in time. After all, she may feel a bit less shy around Chain, but she didn't want the whole world to know that she could talk.
