Natural Habitat: These Volpes are found in high mountain ranges, near the peaks. Beyond the clouds, they lay hidden and protected from unwelcomed visitors. However, they often come down from their homes to hunt, often in the forests. There are a few cases where a gryphon chose to stay in a forest rather then returning to the mountain tops. Over time, they became wingless, still living in the forest, but still such a rare sight to see.
Natural behavior: Gryphons, also called Griffen Volpes, are rather picky when it comes to how things are done. Some might only prey on one kind of animal while others will scavenge off of anything. Some roam alone, while others travel in small flocks (usually of 3-5 volpes). They can be a bit agressive and dominant, it takes a lot for one to take somone as a leader. Even then, it takes hard work and effort for one to accept a leader fully. At first, they aren't the best of pets, but slowly, they'll warm up and may become your best friend.
These volpes are extremely intellegent. If exposed enough, most can pick-up on a language. Mimmicing is a usual for ones that are 'pets', just as a pet parrot would. Afterwards, you might just be holding conversations with one!
Their intellect is tricky to mantain and keep happy.. Bored gyrphons may result in an 'adventure', the volpe going out on a search for something, anything really. Some become so comsumed by their adventure, they may never return! Puzzles, riddles, even sudoku, anything to challenge them will keep them occupied for a while. But that little while won't last the 80 some years they can live up to!
In the wild, they use their smarts to search for prey, friends and foe, and some even seek out gems! Gryphons seem to have a weakness for shining gems.. What they do with them is unknown, so never take one into a jewlery store!
Gryphons have a series of calls for hunting and for communication. They range from chirps to a chuffing sound, their basic communication, and the hawk's cry for hunting. They also 'bird talk', a mess of chirps mixed with chuffing. The bird talk is their own language, somewhat, simple things can be expressed such as affection or distaste.
Unlike all other volpes Gryphon females do not have a second tail. Instead, they have feathers on their front legs and a long feather on their heads. Rather then males attracting females as with most birds, the females attract the males with the often times colorful displays of these extra feathers.
Eating Preferences: Like most volpes, they are omnivores, eating meat and plants. Depending on where the volpe lives, they can have a preference to either meat or veggies. The ones with a more meat based diet live in the mountain tops, preying on game such as deer and sheep. Around rivers, fish are the primary food. The ones who live in the forest mainly eat small game like rabbits, and a variety of fruits.
General care: They can't be kept as an indoor pet, needing free roaming space to fly. Being picky, most will prefer to kill their own dinner rather then taking it from the hands of another, but that depends mostly on the individual's personality. Never clip their wings, it might just kill them.. Besides, hand-raised gryphons don't know how to fly unless you teach them how to. Claws can quickly become long, so regular trimming is advised. They can clean themselves rather well so washing them isn't needed
