Rarity: 10 (on a scale from 0-10, 0 being most common)
Height: 1' 5" (about 43 cm) at the shoulders
Weight: 26 - 34 lbs (About 12 - 15 Kg)
Natural Habitat: Though now considered 'semi-extinct', these small volpes used to thrive in nearly any habitat. It was typical to find them in grasslands and forest, hidden in small underground dens or in hollow tree trunks. Lowlands such as valleys were also a preferred choice of these volpes, though generally the most suitable habitat depended on the pack. Some may like low lands, while others prefer tree tops! (Those wings can take them nearly anywhere!)
Natural behavior: Generally docile, but incredibly shy. They tend to hide away with larger volpes, such as Normals, for protection. Some who don't choose for 'body guards' live underground and stay there. Old 'volpe cities' have been discovered, ranging to just a few 'rooms' to a whole apartment! Because of this, they were viewed as pests, often being hunted and exterminated to save from destruction of one's property, especially farmers, who feared the large holes and tunnel complexes may disrupt the grasses and ruin the land. In all actually, these volpes helped the grass and land with their... Excrements (dung was buried underground, which sped up the process. Considerate, eh?).
Their wings are are quite large compared to their bodies, and with their light weight, can take them through the skies. They didn't fly too very fast, and not too often, but then they did, their bushy tails were used to steer themselves along in the air. Unless the pack was specially adapted, many average volpes didn't fly for too long.
These volpes made full use of their senses. Large eyes gave excellent vision, even in darkness. Their ears easily funneled sound in, combined with near constant flicking, were like radio antenna, scoping out the slightest of sounds. Their noses aren't the best for sniffing out a dinner, but were more adapted to find each other to find pack members old and new. Small whiskers on the snout are sensitive, but needed to be in close range to actually 'feel' anything.
They aren't the most talented communicators, usually keeping quiet. It is rare to hear these volpes at all, except for perhaps a bark or two to ward off intruders.
Eating Preferences: These volpes, like most, are omnivores eating meats and plants. Their diet usually consisted of anything smaller then themselves they could catch, like mice and other rodents, fish, and frogs. Grass was an important part of their diet, often needed for a bit of extra fiber. Vegetables were an oddity, but some did prefer veggies over meat, which caused concern to a few vegetable gardens, but it was blamed on the rabbits. The ones kept as 'pets' often ate, well, pet food. 'Volpe' food, as produced by the sanctuary was general feed for house hold volpes, some liked it, others didn't. Defined preference depended on the Volpe's pack and often times, personality.
General care: Just a good grooming every month to keep the coat nice and shiny, and also to keep shedding fur at bay. These volpes lick themselves clean often, and they can't pass their own fur, so brushing often is necessary. Keeping the claws trimmed keeps one from being scratched up in play, and makes it more comfortable to walk for the volpe. Make sure they have plenty of space to run and burrow, and you'll have a happy volpe.
Notes: Average Volpes have gone 'extinct' in a way. They are no longer available in any way, even breeding. Breeding produces a normal pup... There seems to be an illness in all averages that caused this.
