Dakota was startled at how quickly she gave the command, but he was used to that too. The only thing was, would there even be prey here? All he had seen so far were sickeningly cute butterflies and bees, pollenating the monstrous flowers. Inscets wouldn't be fun to hunt, but anything was better than this awkward standing around.
"Can you smell any prey?" He asked, his eyes gleaming with sudden hunger. He hoped that there were actual animals in here as well as the insects. Perhaps birds would do. There was almost always birds in a garden, right?

As though Thirteen had read his mind, she had hardly lifted her nose to the faint breeze when she replied. "I smell birds." She hesitated a tiny bit though. "We'll have to leave the shade though to hunt them."
This presented a real problem for both of them. Thirteen hated the light and flowers with her life, while looking at them actually hurt Dakota's eyes. Still, the hunting would take her mind off the light and flowers, and Dakota would likely endure it so he could hunt, so perhaps it wasn't that bad.
She padded over to the very edge of the shade and looked back at Dakota, waiting for him to either follow her or tell her that he didn't want to hunt.

Dakota hesitated for a few seconds, and then padded over to join her. He squinted his eyes into the light, and flicked his ears uncomfortably. He would much rather hunt in the dark, but all the song birds would be gone by then. "Fine." He said with a sigh and led the way out from under the tree, trying not to let his shudder show as the light blazed down on his dark fur.
He tried to distract himself by pricking his ears up and listening to the sound of the garden, but all he heard was the wind and leaves of trees rubbing against each other. Thirteen had said she smelled birds, but there was no sign of them.

"That's funny." The yellow volpe said, still at the edge of the shade. She had her nose lifted to the breeze, and was inhaling deeply. "The bird scent is gone." She said sadly. With a slight shrug, she leaped out of the shade, getting it over with quickly. "Maybe it flew to some other part of the garden." She said. "Want to look for it?"
She had her gaze firmly on Dakota's eyes, so she wouldn't need to see the light and flowers that now surrounded them. She wondered just how much the sun was hurting Dakota and thouht about turning back, then shrugged the thought off, not knowng why she had cared.

Dakota stared back calmly, showing no discomfort, on the outside at least. Inside was a different matter, his fur prickled with the heat and he could hardly see. Worse still were his wings, which felt like they were going to explode from all the light they were trying to suck into their depths. He woudn't show weakness in front of Thirteen though, so broke eye contact with her and padded confidently on. "I'm sure it's around here somewhere." Was his reply to her question.

Thirteen shrugged again and followed him, keeping her nose searching for prey scent, but her eyes on Dakota. She didn't know why, but she was sure that she would rush him under the nearest tree if he showed signs of the sunlight hurting him. Maybe it was this garden making her go crazy. She shook herself breifly, and then spotted a clump of bushes. The wind was blowing in the wrong direction now, so she couldn't tell if anything was in them or not.
"I'm going to go check out those bushes." She said, and without waiting for a reply began moving slowly toward them, trying to make no noise and startle potentual prey.

Dakota tensed up and tried not to move as she stalked slowly closer to the bishes. He knew from experience that any movement could scare prey. The sun beat down on his black fur, making him feel like he was wearing a pelt made out of flames, but he held his position. For some reason not known to him, he cared about Thirteen having a succesful hunt, even though he knew that she wouldn't share any of the prey with him if she caught something.

Thirteen crept closer to the bushes, lifting her nose as the wind suddenly changed direction. She drank in the breeze like it was water, and detected the smell of an animal, perhaps a fox or a cat, but it was long gone by now and had only passed by this bush a few days ago. "Nothing." She reported, straightening up and lashing her tails in frustration. She prided herself on being a good hunter, and not being able to find anything was embarassing to her. "I'm sure there's something here though." She said. "Let's keep looking."

Dakota was happy to keep follwing her, espescially when they reached the shady part of the garden and the merciless sun went away. "Perhaps all the prey are keeping cool under these trees." He said. In reality, he had no clue where the prey may be, but he couldn't take anymore of the sunlight. At the same time, he didn't want to look weak, and this seemed like the perfect thing to say. Without waiting for her to reply, as was his custom, he padded under the trees and had to force himself to not let out a sigh of relief as the blessed shade closed around him, soothing his burning fur.

Thirteen wasn't quite sure how, but she knew the reason why he had insisted on hunting in the shade. She also knew that she wasn't going to tease him about it, and she didn't know why that was either. Well, whatever, she prefered the shade too, with its soft shadows and gloom that made what flowers there were look duller. "You're right." She said, wagging her tail. "Birds like the trees, so it would make sense that we would find them here." She brushed past him and began scenting the air.

The time for them to mate had come and passed, and Dakota felt a weird itch, but he shook the feeling off and lifted his nose to the breeze as well. The two volpes were too busy hunting to notice, or perhaps they weren't yet bonded enough to realize this. Well, whatever the reason, they didn't stop in their hunt. Perhaps it was a good thing they hadn't. "I smell a squirrel." Dakota said quietly, his voice almost a growl. He swung his head this way and that, trying to find which direction the smell was coming from. (25/25) (1/15)

Thirteen stiffened, and tried to make no noise as she too smelled the squirrel. "It's coming from there." She said, barely moving her lips to whisper. She pointed her tail at the dense undergrowth to the left of where they were standing. Her lips drew back to expose her teeth and she crept slowly closer to the spot, all her senses trained on where the squirrel was. Her ears were pricked forward, her nose never stopping in its quest, and saliva dripped from her jaws, as if she could already taste the prey. (25/25) (2/15)

Dakota wasn't about to leave the kill to her. With a growl pitched to only carry to Thirteen, he too crept forwards, trying to move faster than Thirteen. With any luck he would pass her and the squirrel would be his. He had after all smelled it first, so it was only right that he would be the one to kill it. Soon though he had to slow down, so he didn't brush too hard against the plants and make noise. He watched with frustration as Thirteen drew ahead of him. (25/25) (3/15)

Thirteen's teeth drew back further in triumph. This was her squirrel. She had after all decided to go hunting first. Without her they would still be back in the shade of the other tree. Clearly the squirrel belonged to her. She hadn't tasted fresh meat in so long, as both Skittles and Wolf prohibited hunting in the den. She personaly didn't see why. It wasn't as if she was hunting the other volpes. Well, that didn't matter now. Wolf and Skittles weren't here, and she was going to hunt this squirrel.

Angry was an understatement. Dakota was furious with Thirteen. As always, when he got upset, his strange black hole wings grew darker and darker, sucking up what little light there was and casting them both into an errie sort of twilight. He glared at the female in front of him. She was stealing his prey! Stealing what he had worked so hard for! He wanted to scare the squirrel away, to watch it scamper up a tree or something, but his hunting instincts, perfectly tuned at the moment, wouldn't let him.
